Miass is a city in the South Urals in Chelyabinsk region. The population of Miass is 167 thousand(2008).
The city is situated in a gold-bearing valley of the River Miass at the foot
of the Ilmen Mountain ridge, 96km from Chelyabinsk. Near the city there are Ilmen Mineralogical Zapovednik(Scientific Nature Reserve), legendary Lake Turgoyak and famous Taganay Mountain ridge. The city’s total area is 1749 sq km. The Moscow – Chelyabinsk railway line goes right through the city. There are more than 45 lakes and reservoirs around the city, dozens of rest-houses, holiday hotels, sites and a Sanatoria. In addition, there are inns, leisure homes, hotels with European quality service and 2 museums.
Turgoyak is a unique lake. Due to its unusually pure water, Lake Turgoyak has been included in the list of the most valuable reservoirs of fresh water in the world. Many call Turgoyak ”the younger brother of Lake Baikal”. This is said to contain some of the purest drinking water in the world, Lake Turgoyak is the clearest and the deepest lake in the Urals.
The National Park “Taganay” (the total area is 568 sq km) it's unmatchable beauty, a small mountain retreat with unique flora and fauna, captivating scenery, most interesting history and still undiscovered mysteries. In the centre of the National Park “Taganay” there is a Taganaisky mounting range – a unique creation of natural stone and taiga. FROM/ON the west side there is – Grand Ringe Taganai with four outstanding peaks – Dvuglavaya(Tow-headed) hill, Otkliknoy (Cry back)crest, Kruglitsa(the highest point of/in the National Park “Taganay”)and Dalny(Far) Taganay. For the tourists enjoyment there are several campsites in the National Park “Taganay”. These are: Bely(White) source, Kialim cordon, Gremuchiy (Roaring) source, the former metreological station on top of the Taganay Mountain and Taganay-Tourist-Service.
